Letter From the President

Continued Greetings to All,

As the bees have been inactive through the winter, so have we as a club.  But as the bees are now longing for spring and beginning their early flights, again are we as a club.  We had a wonderfully informative meeting this past Thursday, Feb. 16, at which Joe Kovaleski spoke about Queen Rearing, the rational, the technique, and the benefits.  We were mesmerized with his knowledge and insight.

Notes from the President

Hello to All,

As summer slowly draws to a close the bees are coming into the fall honey flow.  It seems like everywhere I look I see knotweed in heavy bloom.  Some fields are showing aster and early signs of goldenrod.  For those of you who seek specialty honey the knotweed looks very promising.  Go get ‘em girls!!

Novice Beekeeping Program

The novice beekeeping program got off to a great start on Tuesday evening, March 15, at the Ohio County Library.  Under the guidance of John Grafton, the president of the Ohio Beekeepers Association and a third generation beekeeper, 23 participants were mesmerized with instruction for almost three hours.  In an introduction to the craft, John described the basic elements of the colony functions.  He then talked about the hardware, explaining the variations and choices.  Participants were given a homework assignment to research the catalogues and formulate their basic equ

Welcome to the 2011 Beekeeping Year!

I HOPE YOU ARE SURVIVING THE WINTER.  What an early and intense start with the weather.  As long as the girls have plenty of honey they should be warm and happy.  All of your efforts through the late summer and fall will now pay off.  This will be a good winter to measure your skill as a successful beekeeper.  I hope that we are all thrilled by a sizeable survival of the hives.  And then the work begins again!!  Can you just hardly wait??

Dr. James Tew Speaks at October Meeting

The TriState Beekeepers experienced a rare opportunity when they hosted Dr. James Tew of the OSU Bee Lab located in Wooster, Ohio as their guest speaker.  Dr. Tew has taught in the Department of Entomology since 1978, conducting extensive research on honey bees with an emphasis on pollination behavior.  He has written numerous articles for beekeeping journals and has published two books, “Beekeeping Principles” and “Backyard Beekeeping.”  Currently he is conducting a regionalized cooperative extension beekeeping project with Auburn University.

Beekeeping For Beginners - What A Success!!

The Tri-State Beekeepers and The Oglebay Institute Environmental Center produced their second workshop for new beekeepers at the Schrader Center in Oglebay Saturday, July 17 of 2010. What a success! We hosted twenty participants, fifteen of whom were new to our group. Ralph Seward, the club secretary/treasurer tells me that all of the fifteen expressed an interest in joining the club. It is very rewarding to see that our presentation was effective in fostering that degree of interest.
